How Open Auto Transport Works
Benefits of Open Auto Transport
- Wide Availability – Open car transport is the most popular and common form of car shipping, with countless auto transport companies offering it has their primary, base-line service. It is considered the norm, so there are more options available, making it easy to shop around and find a company that fits your scheduling and various needs, all while securing a fair rate.
- Affordability – Speaking of fair rates, open auto transport offers the best bang-for-your-buck! It is more affordable than enclosed auto transport and is considered most car owners’ preference because of this.
- Safety – While open car transport involves transporting a car via an open trailer, exposing it to the elements of the road, trailers are designed to keep your vehicle safe and secure during their shipment. Advantages of Open Auto Transport
How the Open Car Shipping Works
Step 1: Receiving a Quote & Booking your Order
- Request a quote from a car shipping company. Be sure to research the company first, and read user reviews to make sure it’s a reputable and trustworthy company.
- Provide details like pickup/drop-off locations, vehicle type, condition (whether it’s operable/inoperable), and transport dates. This info allows the shipper to provide you with an accurate quote.
- Once you confirm the details, the transport company will schedule your shipment and assign you to a carrier.
Step 2: Preparing Your Vehicle for Transport
- Before your vehicle is picked up, you’ll have to prepare it for shipment. You’ll need to do so by doing the following:
- Removing all your personal belongings. This is important, as your personal items are not insured during transport. Doing this avoids any loss or theft of your items.
- Ensuring the fuel tank is around ¼ full. This is necessary for weight restriction purposes.
- Checking for any leaks, loose parts, or anything that could fall off.
- Thoroughly wash your car. We advise this, so that you can properly take note of any scratches, scuffs, and overall condition of your vehicle. This will be important in the next step.
- Ensure that your vehicle is fully operational (unless you note it as inoperable). This means that the tires should be properly inflated, battery should be properly charged, etc.
Step 3: Your Vehicle is Picked up
- The driver arrives at the pickup location (or terminal) with their trailer.
- A pre-load inspection is performed:
The driver checks for any visible scratches, dents, or damages.
They record this information on a Bill of Lading (BOL), which you will both sign. - The carrier loads your vehicle onto their trailer. Here is the step-by-step process:
- The driver positions the hydraulic ramps at an angle to drive cars onto different levels of the trailer.
- If the car is operable, they will drive it up the ramp carefully. If the car is inoperable, they will use a winch and chains to pull it onto the trailer.
- Once the car is in place, the driver secures it using heavy-duty straps and wheel chocks to prevent movement during transit.
- The carrier adjusts the ramps to accommodate other cars and balances the weight across the trailer.
After this process is completed, the carrier will begin the shipment process.
Step 4: Transport & Transit Time
- The driver follows a planned route, while making stops to pick up and drop off other vehicles along the way.
- Our team will provide you with regular shipment updates along the way, in addition to accommodating any requests, questions, or concerns that you may have. Feel free to contact us at any point via email, phone, or direct message through our website.
- The transit time will vary depending on the route and distance of delivery, but we will provide you with your shipment’s estimated delivery time beforehand.
Step 5: Your Vehicle is Dropped Off
- The carrier will contact you several hours prior to arrival.
- You or the person of your choosing (a family member or friend) will meet the carrier at the drop off location.
- The driver will adjust the ramps, remove the wheel straps, and carefully drive your vehicle off the trailer. For inoperable vehicles, the carrier will use a winch to roll it down.
- You and the carrier will inspect the car and compare it to the BOL inspection report. If everything looks good, you will sign off and pay any remaining balance due.

The Benefits of Open Car Shipping

Cost-Efficiency
Open car shipping is by far the most cost-efficient option for shipping a car. Because it involves shipping a car with an open trailer, which can hold many vehicles at a time, it has a lower overall cost for the car hauler themselves. Car shipping companies can charge less for their services versus enclosed car shipping, which can usually only hold one car. We even offer discounts for shipping multiple cars together!

Eco-Friendly Transport
Another huge perk of open car shipping – and the fact that open trailers can hold many cars at once – is that they are an extremely eco-friendly form of transport. Shipping many cars at once means fewer trips are required, thus resulting in lower overall fuel consumption. For those who are environmentally conscious, this form of transport should be a no-brainer.

Affordability & Flexibility
Open car transport is the most popular and widely available method for shipping vehicles, leading to increased competition among carriers and keeping prices affordable for customers. The abundance of companies offering this service also makes it easier to find one that meets specific needs, whether related to timing, budget, or special requests.
