How to Ship a Motorcycle

Transporting a motorcycle is a very easy process and can be done in just a few steps. We’ve created a detailed step-by-step breakdown for how to ship a motorcycle:

5-Step Process for Shipping a Motorcycle

1

Choosing a Reputable Motorcycle Shipping Company

Before shipping your motorcycle, you need to find a reliable auto transport company that’s up for the job. And unfortunately, not all of them are trustworthy. To get your motorcycle shipping without a hitch, you’ll need to do a tad bit of work first by researching them. We recommend checking out customer reviews and only choosing companies that have a good track record. Also be sure to take a look at their website and only go with a company that offers all the services and features that you need.

Using a Free Quote Cost Calculator, Requesting Instant Quotes, Comparing Shipping Costs Between Companies

After finding a handful of trustworthy motorcycle shipping companies, your next step is to figure out pricing. Before even requesting a quote, you should get a general idea for how much it’s going to cost you. To do this, you can use a cost calculator; Legendary has a free online cost calculator, which can be found right here.

After getting an idea of your shipment’s cost, the next step is to request quotes from those shipping companies that you picked out in the previous step. Don’t worry, requesting a quote is completely free to do, and just takes a few minutes.

Requesting quotes from many different shipping companies is great as it gives you a better idea of all of your available options, and allows you to get the best deal possible for your motorcycle’s shipment.

Once you’ve decided which shipping company you want to go with, accept their quote. Keep in mind that you only have up to seven days to accept a quote. Because auto transportation fares vary in price from day-to-day, if your quote expires, your new quote might cost you less – or more – so if you’re happy with the initial price quote, we recommend accepting it sooner rather than later.

Preparing Your Motorcycle for Shipping: Cleaning, Removing Loose Items, and Documenting Its Condition

Alright, so you’ve accepted a motorcycle shipping company’s quote! Your motorcycle’s shipment has now been officially booked, and the company should send you all of the proper paperwork for you to sign, assign a driver to your order, and give you information regarding the scheduled pickup date and location. But before your motorcycle is picked up, the next step is preparing it for its pickup.
Here's what you’ll need to do to prep your motorcycle for shipping:

  • Clean your bike. This is needed to clearly see your motorcycle’s condition level. Any visible damage should be easily noticeable, which can be done by giving it a thorough wash.
  • Remove personal items or loose accessories. Don’t keep any of your personal belongings or accessories in or on your bike. We recommend this because nothing outside of your bike itself will be insured during transit. If any of your belongings get damaged or stolen, you will be out of luck.
  • Take pictures. Take plenty of photos (and maybe videos too) of your bike. This is for your own record in the event that your bike gets damaged during transportation. While the drive will conduct a BOL which is essentially the same thing, having some photos on your end will be helpful, and some extra evidence doesn’t ever hurt.

Discuss Insurance Coverage Options with the Shipping Company to Protect Your Motorcycle Against All Transit Risks

Speaking of insurance, before your vehicle gets picked up, talk with the shipping company about their insurance policies and coverage. Even though it’s customary for shipping companies to provide insurance for all vehicles, you should be on the same page with the policies of the company that you’ve hired, so that you’ll know what is and isn’t covered in the event that something goes wrong during your bike’s delivery.

Track Your Shipment. Many Companies Offer Online Tracking, Allowing You to See Where Your Bike Is During Every Step of the Journey

Finally, on your motorcycle’s pickup date, your assigned driver you meet you at your specified location. They’ll first conduct a BOL (Bill of Lading) where they’ll inspect its condition and take plenty of photos of it. Next you’ll sign a few pieces of paperwork, they’ll load it into their trailer, and then start their delivery.

During the delivery process, shipping companies will usually provide you with tracking features where you can check your motorcycle’s delivery status in real-time. While not all of them offer real-time tracking, they should at least send you regular updates, and you can contact them directly through email, phone, and sometime instant messaging to get the latest update on your shipment.

You should receive regular updates, including when your vehicle’s delivery reaches its destination. The driver will likely contact you a few hours prior to their arrival, so be sure to meet them at the delivery location at their arrival time. If you can’t be there, get a friend or family member to meet them there on your behalf and tell the shipping company beforehand.

Finally, on the day of your motorcycle’s delivery date, the driver will unload your vehicle, you’ll sign the last bit of paperwork, and then pay any remaining fees if applicable. After all of that, they’ll hand over your vehicle and its keys, and you’re all set!

The Costs of Shipping a Motorcycle

Motorcycle shipping prices range pretty widely, depending on multiple different factors, including the distance of the shipment, route, and the shipping method.

Distance

The further you need your bike delivered, the more it’s going to cost overall. Shipments that are one or two states over are going to cost a lot less than shipping cross-country, for example.

Shipping Method

Your delivery’s shipping method also factors pretty heavily into the cost. Shipping your motorcycle with door-to-door shipping (pickup delivery straight to and from an address) will cost more than terminal-to-terminal delivery, for instance. Other premium services, such as Express shipments and Guaranteed Shipping, will also add to your delivery cost.

How Long Does It Take to Ship a Motorcycle?

On average, carriers usually cover anywhere from 300 to 500 miles per day. Keep in mind that your motorcycle’s delivery time will depend on its pickup and delivery locations, so deliveries that cover greater distances will cost more.

Transport Distance

The further your shipment’s delivery is, the longer it will take. Deliveries spanning shorter distances, within the same region or state, should only take a few days maximum. On the other hand, shipping a vehicle across the country may take well over a week.

Shipping Company Selected

Not every shipping company is equal. Some companies may provide you with quicker turnaround times than others, while some companies offer premium add-on services like Expedited Shipping that offer faster shipping speeds for additional fees. Depending on your budget, some shipping companies will be able to move your motorcycle incredibly fast.

Time of Year

Another contributing factor is the current time of the year. Seasonal demand can sometimes slow down shipping speeds, while slower seasons might result in faster shipping. If you want to avoid delays, we recommend booking your shipment well ahead of time.
